Boasting more than 300 hours of sunshine a year, the Townsville region of North Queensland offers an exceptional natural playground. From world-famous reef to heritage-listed rainforest and rugged outback, there is a hero experience here for every type of traveller.

Reefs, Islands and Beaches

• Each year from mid-July through August, humpback whales migrate through the waters surrounding Townsville, Magnetic Island and The Palm Island Group.
• Dive or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef — one of the world’s seven natural wonders.
• Magnetic Island’s 23 picturesque bays and beaches offer sailing, bushwalking, snorkelling, dining, water sports and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Nature’s Bounty

• Visit Paluma Village, nestled within the heritage-listed Paluma Range National Park.
• Hike the famous Thorsborne Trail in Hinchinbrook National Park.
• Take the Forts Walk on Magnetic Island for sweeping vistas and koala spotting.
• Head to Hidden Valley for the chance to see a platypus in the wild.

Adventure & Exploration

• Charters Towers, 90 minutes from Townsville, is rich in Gold Rush heritage — and you can even meet Texas Longhorns.
• Ingham, our own “Little Italy”, is home to the TYTO Wetlands and Information Centre.
• Mountain bike the Cape Pallarenda trails across the Many Peaks Range, with ocean vistas and secluded beaches along the way.
