National parks

For those seeking the raw beauty of nature, the nearby national parks offer wonderful opportunities.

Explore Paluma Range National Park, where dense rainforest and cascading waterfalls create incredible scenes. The traditional name for the Paluma Range is Munan Gumburu, meaning ‘misty mountain’ — morning mist is common, and challenges even the most seasoned photographers.

Alternatively, venture into Hinchinbrook, where rainforest and eucalypt forest descend to a mangrove-lined channel with bays, beaches and rocky headlands along the coast. There is more on both in our guide to Paluma National Park.

Wildlife

The region provides front-row seats to a wide range of wildlife, from colourful birds and different species of frog to echidnas, kangaroos, koalas and wallabies.

Capture a kangaroo against a backdrop of sun-drenched landscape, or vibrant tropical birds in their natural habitat — it is all on offer in North Queensland.
